Here are four steps for cleaning and caring for your cheese board or butcher
block:
1) Wash wood with soapy water after every use.
2) Dry the wood immediately after washing to avoid water damage.
3) Apply mineral oil a couple times a month.
4) Do not run the items through the dishwasher!
To prevent the transmission of bacteria, it is a good idea to use a new sponge
to clean your cheese board or butcher block. To treat board for any lingering
scents or stains, gently rub the surface down with lemon juice (or half a
lemon). This acts as a natural bleaching agent.
Does it damage the wood to rub mineral oil on it too often? No, you probably
cannot apply mineral oil too often, although a few times a month should suffice.
